Here are generalized notes, this is a short list, I will add more later.

Here are some of the things that Nick (and myself) did:

Vitamin D -

Vitamin A - the orphan vitamin that modulates the immune response.

Selenium - another forgotten nutrient that plays a key role in Immunity.

Polyphenols (PP):

  • PP are powerful medicines. They do multiple functions such as helping your body cope with stress, they are powerful antioxidants, they can kill off bad bugs, they help the gut (microbiome), kill cancer cells etc.

  • Plants make these chemicals, example: green tea, basil, turmeric, ginger etc.

  • There are thousands of PP

  • Some plants have more concentration of PP.

  • We buy them from trusted sources (Frontier or Banyan) in bulk (saves money) they are organic.

  • We use a wide spectrum of rich plants that are rich in PP.

  • Things like turmeric, Ceylon cinnamon (not cassia), paprika, ginger etc.

  • Nick got great help with his cardiovascular system using dark chocolate (I use cacao powder). These PP target cardiovascular.

  • I can give more details and I recently found a blend that may be more cost effective.

  • We mix these in warmed organic chicken broth with some healthy fats which help absorption.

  • Chicken broth is rich in immune factors and collagen and will help the gut. A healthy gut is important. The PP also assist the gut make good bacteria.
PP are rich in chemicals that strengthen and assist the body (to regenerate). They target several pathways.

Diet:
Omnivore since proteins are essential for cellular function. 80% non-processed foods, e.g. real food. No fake fats, so we use olive oil, butter and my new favorite, Ghee (as Cultured Ghee). Healthy fats are backbones of cellular function. I avoid cheap oils (mainly processed foods), I avoid GMO foods and oils. I do eat fun foods from time to time, got to be somewhat happy :) I also avoid anything with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup).

Fresh (preferred) vegetables, and fruit. These too, contain PP and the fiber from them help build good bacteria in your gut.

I stay away from fad diets such as extreme juice fasting (this is prolonged juice fasting) I have worked with 2 women who were seriously damaged from this. Gurus are typically wrong in their thinking. Balance is always necessary.

Pomegranates are a good one since it contains a good source of PP - these PP target the gut and work as antioxidants. The forum devoted to M.E. (cousin of LC) rave about pomegranates.

Berries such as blueberry contains a rich PP known as Pterostilbene. This is a cousin of resveratrol which btw, never worked for me. Aldi's sells them for $7 in the frozen section for a big bag. They carry organic and they have organic strawberries frozen as well. These PP also work in the gut since they contain a PP known as Ellagic acid.

Eat food with spices which donates more PP in your system. Garlic, cayenne, oregano, basil, ginger, cloves (very powerful antioxidant), curry is loaded with PP.

Fermented foods not probiotics

Fermented food > than probiotics. Personally, I think probiotics are overrated. Better to get fermented foods such as Kimchi (make sure it is unpasteurized), kefir is decent and sauerkraut (unpasteurized). Walmart carries unpasteurized sauerkraut and kimchi. Whole Foods carries Hex Ferments. They sell a Kimchi or kimchi with Miso. About $12. You can find kefir at many stores including Aldi's. I use LifeWay. It is about $5.

You should not need much of them assuming you get the plant fibers. Plant fibers mix with the ferments and create healthy byproducts (butyrate) that assist immunity, metabolic rates etc.

Hex Ferments

Krauts (clevelandkitchen.com)

Lifeway Kefir

Note: Some people report a histamine release with ferments, so be mindful of that. Typically, this caused insomnia for me. I am sure that others may have other symptoms. As the body heals, I would suspect this will disappear.

Dementia Research

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor so I cannot diagnose or offer treatments, I am sharing this information that is considered educational. Much of the research on dementia/Alzheimer's is centered on what is referred to as Tight Junction Proteins. These are proteins that act like clamps that hold tissues together in terms of neurological, these "clamps" hold the blood vessels together. And when the tight junction proteins become damaged, the blood vessels begin to "leak".  Science refers the tight junction proteins as barrier as in the blood brain barrier. They will also refer to as barrier integrity. AI says this:  Tight junction proteins are vital for various physiological processes, including the formation of barriers in the brain (blood-brain barrier), intestines, and other tissues. They also play a role in disease mechanisms when their function is disrupted. The barrier function occurs in the blood vessels, and they think that when they leak, this is affecting co...

Microbiome SCFAs & AutoImmunity

Does SCFA impact immune and inflammatory pathways? Show thinking Yes, absolutely! Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) are major players in controlling immune and inflammatory pathways, both within the gut and systemically. This is one of the most significant and exciting areas of research on SCFAs. Here's how they exert their control: Interaction with G-Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs): GPR41 and GPR43: These are the most well-studied SCFA receptors, found on various cell types throughout the body, including immune cells (e.g., neutrophils, macrophages, T cells), gut epithelial cells, and adipocytes. When SCFAs (particularly acetate, propionate, and butyrate) bind to these receptors, they trigger intracellular signaling pathways that can influence immune cell function, cytokine production, and inflammatory responses. Histone Deacetylase (HDAC) Inhibition: Butyrate (and to a lesser extent propionate) are potent inhibitors of HDACs. HDACs are enzymes that modify histones, proteins aro...
You can buy most of this at Kroger's, I listed the pictures below. The idea is that you are targeting the gut, the microbiome to be exact. I am not going to list out all the studies but they have discovered that the right bacteria in the gut can change a lot of things including metabolic, neurological, immune responses, weight gain and many other things.  Increasing the good bacteria such as bifidobacteria etc. can also suppress the bad bacteria which have been linked to numerous problems.  There are products that you can buy on Amazon and these will also support the microbiome by giving the nutrients they need.  Kroger's has the ones in the pictures below, you will find the Cleveland Kraut in the refrigerated section and so is the Kefir. Both of these are live foods meaning they contain the good bacteria. Sauerkraut as canned does not work since there are no live organisms.  You will have to experiment with the doses; I do a couple of tablespoons of the kraut and ju...
