Glutathione is one of the body's key players in reducing oxidative stress - excessive oxidative stress is corrosive, it attacks normal cell functions, so it causes problems systemically. This could be neurological, immune, gut related, joints/muscles, endocrine functioning etc.
Cortisol is another term to consider. Cortisol is a hormone that gets secreted under stress, it has quite a few beneficial attributes but long term release causes problems. It shifts behaviors of the cells and ends up created a lot of oxidative stress, this is why you see therapies meant to reduce stress help because this ends up reducing cortisol. Taking walks, talking with people, sitting in the sun, proper sleep etc. all work to reduce cortisol levels.
When cortisol is flowing too strong, it reduces necessary nutrients and those nutrients become used up. Those same nutrients are necessary for glutathione production. Magnesium is one of those. Other nutrients such as the B family of vitamins are used up as well and those same nutrients are necessary for glutathione production.
Glutathione and cortisol levels I would say are opposites. High cortisol reduces glutathione (and other antioxidants). Good levels of glutathione are going to keep cortisol in check.
Relationship to the gut environment. the gut depends on glutathione (and other nutrients) to keep it happy. There is a lot going on in the gut, many immune processes and inflammatory pathways. Too complex to go through now but glutathione plays a key role in keeping the gut happy. It modulates the immune response and keeps the inflammation down which is key for a happy gut. If the gut is acting up, this transcends to the neurological, so sleep is going to be off, focus, depression and anxiety etc. But interesting, the brain also controls the gut environment.
Reducing stress can preserve glutathione. I think that can help but I think that supplying the body with dense and specific nutrients is more necessary. Antioxidants keep glutathione from being used up, and specific nutrients will help build up more glutathione.
One of the better supplements if the Life Force by Source Naturals, I am not sure you bought that but it is highly recommended. It provides the baseline B vitamins and minerals necessary for glutathione production. I use the version without iron.
I can list some more supportive things at a later time if you like.
